Performs skilled electronic and electrical work both in the electronic shop and in the field while engaged in the installation and repair of all electronic and electrical equipment in sewer pumping stations.

Examples of Work

  • Troubleshoots and repairs electronic equipment such as pump station control panels, flow meters, rain gauges, telemetry equipment, lighting, television cameras, monitors, and power conversion equipment used in the City of Hampton wastewater system.
  • Designs ladder diagrams and programs relay logic for timers, counters, sequencers, and shift registers for micro-processor use; troubleshoots for logic faults.
  • Installs, tests, and repairs electronic variable voltage and frequency motor drive systems.
  • Calibrates, tests, and repairs flow meter recording equipment and toxic and hazardous gas monitors.
  • Measures, cuts, bends, threads, assembles, and installs electrical conduit; splices wires and connects to fixtures and equipment.
  • Designs and installs control and distribution apparatus, such as relays and circuit breaker panels. Connects power cables to equipment and installs grounding leads.
  • Tests circuitry to ensures electrical compatibility and safety of all components using instruments such as oscilloscopes, pulse generators, logic probes, electronic multimeters, and vacuum tube voltmeters.
  • Performs preventive maintenance checks of station controls, motors, and digital and analog alarm transmitters.
  • Installs and maintains five seventy-five horsepower industrial type electric motors; replaces motor bearings. Tests motors to ensure that performance meets specifications. Maintains and repairs gasoline and diesel emergency power systems. Rebuilds sump pumps.
  • Performs related duties as required.


Graduation from high school or successful completion of the GED.

Extensive experience in the repair of complicated motor control panels and switches; extensive experience in the repair of gasoline and diesel emergency power supply systems.

Requires thorough knowledge of the national and local electrical codes; thorough knowledge of the repair and operation of industrial class electric motors; ability to read wiring diagrams and schematics; and good physical condition.

Possession of a Master's Electrician Certification for the State of Virginia is preferred

Must possess a valid motor vehicle operator's license issued by the State of Virginia and must have a satisfactory driver's record based upon the City of Hampton's criteria.

Possession of a valid State of Virginia Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or a Commercial Driver's License instruction permit preferred.

Must successfully complete a background check related to this position.


Performs duties under the general supervision of the pumping station maintenance supervisor, who evaluates performance on a periodic basis. Working conditions may be hazardous at times. Requires incumbent to be on call 24 hours a day as needed. Incumbent is subject to call-out and is required to carry an electronic signaling device that enables him/her to respond to emergency situations. This is position is non-exempt.
