What You Will Do

This position will be filled at either the Program Manager 1/2 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level

The Laboratory Directed Research and Development (LDRD) Office is responsible for planning, executing, and reporting a $180M research and development (R&D) program that positions the Laboratory for its future missions. This LDRD Program Manager works under the Program Director and Deputy Program Director and provides technical and program management support to the program. LDRD is committed to technical excellence, transparency, and diversity and inclusion in all that the program does to advance the Laboratory's technical vitality, mission agility, and workforce development.

Program Manager 1 ($87,200 - $142,500)

As a Program Manager 1, you will provide assessments based on quantitative and qualitative analysis of LDRD metrics and outcomes, to aid in optimizing program formulation, implementation, and strategic direction. The Program Manager supports the management of one or more components of the LDRD portfolio, with substantial supervision from the Program Director and Deputy Program Director.

Program Manager 2 ($105,700-$176,400)

In addition to what was outlined at the lower level, at this level the Program Manager 2 will also be tasked to assist in other areas such as communications, responses to capability reviews, etc as assigned by the LDRD leadership team. The Program Manager will directly manage one or more components of the LDRD portfolio, with minimal supervision from the Program Director and Deputy Program Director.

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Ability to analyze complex data that can be applied to assess LDRD metrics and outcomes.
  • Entry level knowledge of the execution, oversight, and/or evaluation of R&D and its outcomes.
  • Scientific/engineering knowledge in one or more LANL technical disciplines.
  • Record of effective interaction with people at all levels in a technical organization.
  • Effective oral and written communication to all audiences.
  • Demonstrated record of commitment to quality, excellence, and diversity in the workplace.



Additional Job Requirements for Program Manager 2:


  • In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualification at the higher level requires:
  • Experience in the execution, oversight, and/or evaluation of R&D and its outcomes
  • Experience in the area of program development activities, goals and objectives; creating program evaluation tools and metrics to evaluate the effectiveness of a program.
  • Experience in coordinating high-level internal and/or external visits.



Education/Experience at lower level
: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree from an accredited institution and 2 years of directly related technical and project management experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.



At this level an advanced degree may be expected.



Education/Experience at higher level:




Position requires a Bachelor's Degree from an accredited institution and 5 years of directly related technical and project management experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.



At this level an advanced degree may be expected.



Desired Qualifications:

  • Broad knowledge of LANL and/or NNSA science, technology, and engineering (ST&E) and missions.
  • Experience in formal peer review processes, such as employed by LDRD at LANL.

    Success in technical project management.
  • Working knowledge of the DOE, NNSA management, and other external oversight of LDRD.
  • Ability to obtain an SCI clearance.

This position will be located in Los Alamos, NM.
