Job Responsibilities




Under administrative direction, provides technical expertise in the coordination of sophisticated, large scope operational interface between the Midrange Systems Operations section, Doll customers, and vendors associated with the data storage and backup; performs complex planning, implementation, and coordination of Doll Backup infrastructure according to best practices, while ensuring high levels of data quality and availability. Maintains interface functions between system programs, application programs and data processing hardware and software for multi-platform servers pertaining to backups. Performs complex professional configuration of existing and installation and configuration of new backup software and hardware and operating systems, lifting equipment weighing up to 65 pounds. Assesses and develops long-term strategic goals for backup requirements. Serves on-call for the more complex issues. Serves as a project coordinator for full-range major/complex projects, very large hardware/software deployments and installations across multiple systems and locations. Provides technical expertise in the coordination of sophisticated, large scope operational interface between the Midrange Systems Operations section, DolT customers, and vendors associated with the data storage and backup, and serves on-call for the more complex issues. Performs complex planning, implementation, and coordination of Doll Backup infrastructure according to best practices, while ensuring high levels of data quality and availability. Maintains interface functions between system programs, application programs and data processing hardware and software for multi-platform servers pertaining to backups; develops, implements and maintains change control for modifications, incident response, detailed architecture documentation and testing processes for management of the backup environment; analyzes backup equipment performance, monitors and troubleshoots hardware/software status, collects information and prepares summary reports; monitors the backup application server(s) processes and errors to ensure overall system performance and stability. Ensures integrity of backup appliances and stored data assets during maintenance and/or enhancement activities by adhering to the adopted methodology standards, including the management of storage devices (Virtual Tape Library, tape SAN, NAS etc.). Utilizes Tivoli Storage Manager (TSM) server administration, Tivoli Backup Archive Client installation and configuration, EMC Integrated Data Protection Appliance (IDPA) server administration, IDPA client installation and configuration, EMC Data Domain administration, EMC lsilon and ECS operations, HPE Qumulo, StoreOnce, and Veeam in the performance of duties.

  • Performs complex professional configuration of existing and installation and configuration of new backup software and hardware and operating systems, lifting equipment weighing up to 65 pounds; installs hardware/software, tests, debugs, and interfaces between devices. Monitors daily backup operations to insure they are available for data recovery. Resolves complex hardware and software problems by monitoring and analyzing backup systems performance, collects information, identifies source of problem and oversees mitigation. Prepares summary reports to management teams. Independently provides diagnosis and problem resolution to clients. Confers with vendors to resolve software and hardware problems by accessing online vendor knowledge base systems (repository of support solutions, known issues with hardware or software), opens vendor service requests and applies software patches as determined by the vendor. Serves as liaison between agency customers and DolT management/technicians for resolution of customer problems/incidents. Monitors trouble tickets to ensure acceptable service levels to agencies within listed time frames are being met; escalates time sensitive trouble calls to senior staff and/or appropriate vendor for faster resolution time. Travels in the performance of duties.
  • Assesses and develops long-term strategic goals for backup requirements. Works with data owners, department managers and customers to address customers' long-term backup requirements. Researches, analyzes, conducts, and coordinates in-depth documented studies related to backup with recommendation to management in support of procurement and development efforts. Develops network diagrams and flow charts, determines capacity, retention periods, and backup and recovery requirements. Participates in disaster recovery planning, testing and maintenance for the enterprise backup environments. Develops policies, standards and procedures to support the backup environment.
  • Serves as a project coordinator for full-range major/complex projects, very large hardware/software deployments and installations across multiple systems and locations. Determines and coordinates project components such as project scheduling and assignments; provides expertise, guidance, and direction to staff; reviews results, and incorporates individual components of project into the final product. Creates policies, procedures, standards and methodologies for the backup team.
  • Keeps abreast of new developments in the Information Technology field; continues education in Information Technology, both formal and in-service training by attending meetings, seminars, conferences; travels when held offsite. Remains informed on data retention laws, trends and issues, including current and emerging technologies and best practices; advises and educates management teams on their relative importance. Develops and implements a training manual, plan and classes for customers pertaining to backup.
  • Performs other duties as require or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.







Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities




Requires knowledge, skill and mental development equivalent to four years of college with course work in computer science or directly related fields, supplemented by three years of professional experience in a related Information Technology field. Requires ability to analyze data logically and exercise sound judgment in defining, evaluating, and solving complex administrative, organizational, technical, or operational problems where solutions may be of a precedent-establishing or research nature. Requires extensive knowledge of hardware and software, languages, and procedures to provide assigned technical and analytical services. Requires developed oral and written communication skills to present technical information to others with clarity and precision. Requires ability to coordinate the activities of work associates to achieve desired results. Requires the ability to lift up to 65 pounds. Requires the ability to utilize agency supplied materials/equipment (i.e., cellphone, laptop, etc.). Requires the ability to serve on-call. Requires a valid driver's license and the ability to travel.



Specialized Skills:
Requires experience in the following: Tivioli Storage Manager (TSM) server administration, Tivoli Backup Archive Client installation and configuration, EMC Integrated Data Protection Appliance (IDPA) server administration, IDPA client installation and configuration, EMC Data Domain administration, EMC lsilon and ECS operations, HPE Qumulo, StoreOnce, and Veeam, backup, recovery, business continuity and data encryption/deduplication and replication; large-scale automated tape operations; complex virtual environments; tiered storage fundamentals, along with mid-range operating systems and windows- based platforms, network communication concepts and principles, including client/server network configurations, NDMP, routers, routing protocols, switches, firewalls and reduplication.




Requires the ability to successfully complete a nationwide background check, which includes fingerprints and photograph, as defined by the Internal Revenue Service Pub 1075.




Requires the ability to meet all agency vaccine/health-related policies and guidance.
