Job overview

Lead Associates are responsible for different departments in the store, Production, Donation Dock, and Sales Floor. In each of these areas of responsibility, you will be giving employees direction while working side-by-side, exceeding customer and donor expectations, building strong working relationships, and providing a role model of teamwork and Goodwill Values, all while helping the store achieve its productivity and sales goals. This is not like other retail jobs. Sure, we work 40 hours per week like other managers and we are open 7 days a week. But, our products are gently used, donated items. Items come in bags, boxes, totes, and in pieces. Items that need to be unpacked, sorted, priced, and displayed. It’s messy. It’s dusty. It can be cold in the winter and hot in the summer. The Store Manager needs you to display ownership over your department as well as the store in the absence of the Store and Assistant Store Managers. Willingness to display initiative and resourcefulness are crucial skills here. Supporting the mission is a complex job, but you will get a sense of fulfillment like no other. Essential/Primary Functions:

  • Supervises retail associates - dock workers, cashiers, and processors.

  • Interviews and hires candidates for employment with MERS Goodwill and helps to identify and recommend employees with proven performance for advancement.

  • Trains employees within the designated period regarding their job duties and all aspects of their employment with MERS Goodwill.

  • Monitors the training of employees and provides appropriate feedback on the performance of each employee.

  • Issues disciplinary action such as written or oral discipline, or other remedial measures to employees.

  • Coaches and counsels employees with regard to the performance of their job duties.

  • Investigates incidents involving company property, equipment, and personnel. Issues appropriate discipline from the result of investigations conducted.

  • Exercises independent judgment in assigning daily job duties to retail associates and leads retail associates to achieve daily operational tasks.

  • Ensures that associates are performing all of their essential and primary functions. Failure to do so can lead to disciplinary action up to and including termination.

  • Coordinates and/or makes daily bank runs and ensures the accuracy of depots and change orders.

  • Notifies management immediately of any cash, register, and/or operating issues.

  • Contacts management, HR VP regarding any harassment, sexual harassment, or similar situated complaints or issues at the store.

  • Conducts new hire orientation on-site and ensures all documents are valid, complete, and accurate and are submitted to HR.

  • Ensures employees complete training within the designated period.

  • Oversees store operations, resources, and budgets for the retail store and ensures all goals are met or exceeded.

  • Cooperates LP and HR investigations.

  • Performs closing and opening procedures. Monitors and orders supplies for the store as needed.

  • Models core values. Drives culture with an understanding and commitment to establish a culture of safety, ethics, and quality within the store.

  • conducts regular internal audits to ensure agency policies and procedures are being adhered to.

  • Supports customer service efforts by modeling positive and friendly behaviors.

  • Deescalates customer dissatisfaction quickly and effectively.

  • Assists with leading the retail store team in its efforts to meet and exceed daily, monthly, and yearly operative revenue goals, expense, and production goals by focusing on quality, quantity, merchandising, customer experience, and cleanliness/organization of the store.


  • Education: High School Diploma, or GED.

  • Training & Experience: Minimum of one year of retail experience with some retail management preferred.

  • License or Certificate: Valid state driver's license, reliable transportation, and current auto insurance required as needed for use for company business.

  • Physical/Sensory demands: Ability to move throughout the facility. Ability to lift, push, pull, and carry a minimum of 40 pounds. Ability to communicate effectively in written and verbal form.. Frequently bending, lifting, twisting, pulling, and pushing. Ability to stand for extended periods of time and work in extreme temperatures. Ability to tolerate extreme dirt, dust, lint, dyes, and common cleaning chemicals.
