Position Description

Prison Milker milks cows, cleans milking and milk handling equipment, oversees and instructs inmates; and does related work as required at a prison dairy. Incumbents possess a degree of knowledge and proficiency sufficient to perform work independently with little or no additional training.

The Nevada Department of Corrections has a vacancy for a Prison Milker at Northern Nevada Correctional Center (NNCC), in Carson City, Nevada. The incumbent will supervise milking operations of lactating cows. Perform maintenance on milking system as needed. Incumbent will assist with other farm related duties as needed. Incumbent will need to maintain health of cows and perform other assigned duties as needed. Knowledge of herd health and location cycle is imperative. Record keeping is required.

Incumbent must be willing to work weekends and holidays. May include working a split shift at times.

Minimum Qualifications

  • One year of experience milking cows on a milk production line using mechanized milking equipment.

  • The exam will consist of an application evaluation. It is essential that applications include detailed information with time frames regarding education and experience. Special Requirements

  • A State of Nevada/FBI background check will be required of the selected applicant.
  • A pre-employment criminal history check and fingerprinting are required. Persons offered employment in this position will be required to pay for these items.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Ability to perform general maintenance associated with a dairy or crop farm

General knowledge of bovine health care, disease prevention and treatment.

Working knowledge of the use and care of mechanical milking equipment.

Ability to detect heat signs, calculate gestation times and assist with cow birthing.

Working knowledge of modern methods of sanitation on a milk production line.
