Support Personal Lines business strategy by following required processes and guidelines and establishing relationships with agents to underwrite business within authorized limits that contributes to a profitable portfolio.


Primary Responsibilities



  • Determine degree and acceptability of insurance risk for personal lines policy applications, endorsements and renewals by analyzing property characteristics, identifying hazards and reviewing inspector comments as required to ensure profitable risk selection
  • Perform due diligence by utilizing internet resources, vendor tools and claims risk alert recommendations to identify inconsistencies, review additional exposures and ensure risk selection contributes to business growth
  • Ensure adherence to Personal Lines underwriting standards, objectives and guidelines by processing policies in a timely and efficient manner to meet department production requirements, state regulatory requirements and agent expectations
  • Facilitate the resolution of basic Department of Insurance (DOI) inquiries by evaluating written policies and clarifying information to communicate underwriting process and assist with determining validity and compliance of underwriting decisions
  • Build relationships with agents by conducting training sessions, informing on new products and programs and clarifying and explaining underwriting decisions to ensure understanding of Personal Lines goals and objectives
  • Foster a partnered approach to underwriting by sharing knowledge, developing underwriting skills and engaging Associate Underwriters to perform support and administrative tasks

Required Qualifications



  • High School Diploma/GED
  • 2 years relevant experience

Preferred Qualifications



  • Bachelor Degree in Risk Management
  • 2+ years of front line personal insurance underwriting experience (claims, auto or home are relevant)
  • Phone (direct dial or call center) experience
  • Strong decision making skills with the ability to prioritize tasks
  • Leadership skills
  • Collaborative style with an ability to thrive within a team environment
  • Basic knowledge of products and concepts relating to the insurance industry
  • Applied knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite
  • Applied knowledge of terminology, function and fundamental capabilities of common computer, software, information and communication technology devices, components, and concepts
  • Basic understanding of insurance automation, mainframe operating systems and XM processing systems
  • Working knowledge of underwriting processes and procedures
  • Working knowledge of laws and regulations related to area of responsibility
  • Clearly and confidently convey information to a wide audience
  • High attention to detail
  • Act fairly, ethically and with integrity when decision-making
  • Maintain confidentiality of private or sensitive information
  • Manage and resolve conflict and reconcile differences
