Job Summary




Desk Attendants will work as a receptionist at the front desk and/or as a reference assistant in the secure reading room

Front desk duties involve:

  • Greeting patrons and visitors
  • Directing telephone calls and communications for staff
  • Monitoring the exhibition galleries
  • Creating a welcoming and inclusive environment for a wide range of library users

Reading room duties include:

  • Assisting patrons
  • Monitoring use of materials from the library’s collection of rare books and manuscripts
  • Responding to in-person and email reference inquiries
  • Training will be provided
  • Other occasional duties and projects as assigned

Qualifications




EDUCATION


Required


  • Currently enrolled as a student at Indiana University.


WORK EXPERIENCE


Preferred


  • Experience working in a library or museum setting.

  • Experience in a customer service role.


SKILLS


Required


  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Reliability, punctuality, maturity, and keen attention to detail.

  • Comfortable and confident in a position that requires frequent interaction with the public.

  • Able to adjust to varying priorities and pace.


Preferred


  • Interest in special collections or rare books and willingness to learn about the history and functions of our library.



Working Conditions / Demands




Must be able to perform essential job duties with or without accommodation. Some Saturday shifts will be required.
