Job Description

Under the general supervision of the Building Official, the Code Compliance Officer is responsible for performing inspections of and enforcement of health and sanitation laws and regulations. Work is performed independently within established policies, laws, and regulations. Job Responsibilities

1. Inspects food service establishments, and businesses conducting manufacturing, processing, distribution, or handling of food for conformance with sanitary laws and regulations; inspects schools, institutions, and any other establishment providing food to the public; issues permit for food establishments. Inspects public pools and spas

2. Collects samples of food or food products for analysis by laboratory as needed

3. Inspects and makes recommendations for corrective actions for various health violations

4. Interprets sanitary laws and regulations to owners, operators and managers, and assists them in achieving voluntary compliance

5. Prepares and maintains necessary records and reports

6. Investigates all health and sanitation violations relating to City ordinances or state law

7. Initiates legal actions as required

8. Performs related work as required

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities - 1. Knowledge of health codes and regulations related to the sanitary practices of public eating, drinking and food service establishments; sanitation and sanitary standards as applied to the production, processing, and handling of food products

2. Ability to conduct a variety of inspections and surveys; and maintain and prepare accurate reports

3. Ability to communicate effectively through written and verbal skills

4. Ability to read and interpret laws and policies concerned with sanitation; establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the public; analyze sanitation defects and outline corrective actions to be taken; obtain cooperation from the public; and enforce regulations firmly and tactfully

Physical Requirements

Lifting and carrying up to 50 pounds; subject to sitting, standing, climbing, stooping or twisting for extended periods of times; working both indoors and outdoors in extreme temperatures including heat, cold, temperature swings and inclement weather; and some exposure to dust, odor, electrical, mechanical and toxic hazards. Education/Training/Experience Requirements

1. High school diploma or equivalent

2. Class "C" Texas driver"s license

3. Ability to receive Food Protection Management Certification from state-accredited training program within one year of employment or have a working knowledge or training in principles of food protection, safety, and management guidelines

4. Ability to earn Basic Code Enforcement Officer Certification within two years of employment
