Library Education Assistant

Position Summary:

The Library Education Assistant under the supervision of the Principal will be responsible for providing support to the grade level instructional program with specific responsibilities for maintaining the library collection; identifying age-appropriate resources for students and teachers utilizing library resources; selecting items in support of classroom instruction; and performing clerical functions related to collection, processing, circulation, maintenance, and inventory of library materials.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assist teachers, students, and administrators for the purpose of identifying resource materials for use in the classroom and/or class assignments.
  • Evaluates books and/or periodicals for retention within the collection (e.g. repairing damaged books, recommending retirement or replacement of books) for the purpose of ensuring the availability of books and library materials depending on the assignment or grade level content.
  • Maintains materials inventory (e.g. library books, hardware/software, and related instructional materials, etc) for the purpose of providing up-to-date references and ensuring the availability of materials when required.
  • Performs circulation activities (e.g. item check-in and check-out, preparing circulation count, listing overdue items) for the purpose of controlling the use, location, and availability of items in the library collection.
  • Responds to inquiries of students and staff on the availability of books, age-appropriate material, and status of overdue book returns.
  • Maintain information system Destiny, updating patron information as needed to track fines, overdue books, manage notices, etc.
  • Organize activities for special library projects or events, such as book fairs.

Other duties:

  • Direct student morning arrival, greeting students and buses outside as they arrive. Including taking possible driver reports and communicating this to the Transportation Coordinator.
  • Participates in various student and parent activities which occur in school including curriculum nights, and school events.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Skills/Abilities:

  • Knowledge of standard basic principles of library science and processing of library materials
  • Knowledge of library practices, procedures, and terminology
  • Knowledge of computerized reference materials and use of technology
  • Knowledge of Dewey Decimal System of classification
  • Knowledge of the library information system Destiny
  • Knowledge of record-keeping techniques
  • Ability to work at a desk and in meetings of various configurations
  • Ability to read printed matter and computer screens.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with others; teachers, parents, students
  • Ability to push, pull, and transport instructional and presentation materials
  • Ability to process and shelve library materials

Education and Experience:

  • Minimum: High School Diploma. Candidates with a post-secondary certificate that provides courses in cataloging, reference, and automated library systems preferred.
  • Experience Minimum:

    • Experience working with children in a K-12 setting preferred
    • Experience working in a K-12 library setting preferred.

  • Must be 18 years or older at the time of employment, must possess a valid Minnesota Driver’s License or state identification, must satisfactorily pass a criminal background check, and must comply with organizational and district policies.
