Career Services Specialist

Position: Career Services Specialist

Department: Office of Career Planning and Development

Employment Status: Full-Time

Organizational Relationship: reports to the Director of Career Planning and Development

JOB PURPOSE: The Career Services Specialist provides students with professional development and growth and internships and employment opportunities. This position seeks to support the mission of the Wagner Career Planning and Development Office to provide life compass assessments to explore career pathways, engage students with innovative, accessible, and inclusive professional programming, and create relationships between students and employers. Primary responsibilities consist of building Wagner College’s visibility with students thru programming, development, and department collaborations and industry professionals by creating opportunities for collaborations in the classroom and on-campus programming.


Essential Functions:

Career Development

  • Serve as a career counselor/adviser for all currently enrolled students.

  • Plan and execute numerous campus-wide career development seminars, workshops, and classroom sessions to educate students on the need for and steps in the career planning process; including, but not limited to, personal effectiveness skills courses, focused career fairs, and classroom presentations by faculty invitation.

  • Cooperate with the academic advisement office in assisting currently undeclared students to identify the most appropriate academic major(s) and/or minor(s).

  • Assist the Director in administering and interpreting individual interests, skills, abilities, and values assessment instruments; including, but not limited to PathwayU.

  • Represent the college and career services at specified regional professional association conferences and professional development workshops.

  • Utilize NACE Career Readiness definition and competencies to educate students, campus partners, and employers on preparing students for the workforce.

  • Serve as a liaison between educational and community resources.

  • Provide backup for the management of the on-campus interview system and automated referral system.

  • Maintain a high level of relationship development with alumni, and students that result in mentorship and viable networking opportunities.

  • Assist with reports on career development trends; provide information and data on career market trends, new career techniques, and strategies to the staff at Wagner Career Connection, Wagner students, and other key stakeholders as required.

  • Work with key departments and a variety of Wagner College departments, employers, instructors, vendors, and public agencies to support the needs of Wagner students.

  • Support the Director in designing and implementing collaborative and scalable programs and engagement strategies to connect undergraduate and graduate students to enhance their career search skills.

  • Maintain social media and Internet-based activities including, social media accounts, email campaign outreach initiatives, and others as appropriate.

  • Attend meetings, conferences, and professional development activities both on and off campus.

Employment Outreach

  • Maintain a high level of relationship development with alumni and employers that result in employers seeking Wagner talent for diverse internship and full-time employment opportunities.

  • Increase the number and satisfaction of employer representatives who visit campus or are engaged in recruitment efforts.

  • Ensures accurate and timely capture of employer feedback.

  • Work in a team-based environment to build relationships with employers and alumni interested in engaging in career programs and activities.

  • Assist with reporting on industry trends; provide information and data on employers to staff at Wagner Career Connection Office, Wagner students, and other key stakeholders as required.

  • Bachelor’s Degree required and Master’s/advanced degree(s) preferred.

  • Project and program management experience leading to quantifiable results and goal attainment.

  • Ability to establish, maintain and enhance effective and productive relationships with external and internal key stakeholders.

  • Experience working with diverse populations; demonstrated professionalism and cultural humility.

  • Ability and proven track record in meeting goals dependent upon internal and external partnerships.

  • Ability to analyze and utilize data, assessment tools, and career information, and analyze and use employment and higher education trends.

  • Demonstrated effective collaboration, presentation, reporting, and oral and written communication skills.

  • Commitment to students and maintaining an inviting, inclusive, and equitable office ethos and environment.

  • Effective team builder and group leader.

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality, exercise sound judgment, and act with discretion.

  • Ability to take risks, assess and shift priorities and adapt to a rapidly changing environment.

  • Ability to utilize Handshake (or similar CRM platform), MS office suite, web editing, and social media technologies for marketing, analysis, and work product.

  • Ability to travel and work nights and weekends as needed.

  • Demonstrated understanding and consideration of the differing needs and concerns of individuals with varying identities, cultures, and backgrounds.

In compliance with NYC’s Pay Transparency Act, the annual base salary for this position is $58,500.
