Major Duties and Responsibilities

  • Works under the direction of a State Court Judge.
  • Creates verbatim recording of proceedings held before the State Court Judges of the Muscogee County State Court to include examination, testimony, judicial opinions, judge's charge to jury, judgment or sentence of court, or other proceedings in court of law.
  • Reads portions of transcript during trial at judge's request and asks speakers to clarify inaudible statements or cancel out any discrepancies.
  • Transcribes, proof, edits, and produces printed transcripts of proceedings.
  • Provides transcripts upon request and within strict time limitations.
  • Works cooperatively and jointly with team members to provide continuous improvement and customer-driven service.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of recording and transcribing equipment and basic troubleshooting.
  • Knowledge of advanced legal and medical terminology.
  • Knowledge of applicable state, federal and local laws, rules and regulations.
  • Knowledge of computer applications related to the work.
  • Skill in recordkeeping, report preparation, filing methods and records management techniques.
  • Skill in proper use of the English language, including spelling, grammar, punctuation, and vocabulary.
  • Skill in using tact, discretion, initiative and independent judgment within established guidelines.
  • Skill in organization and prioritization of work.
  • Ability to set priorities, meet critical deadlines, and follow up on assignments with a minimum of direction.
  • Ability to prepare clear and concise reports, correspondence and other written materials.
  • Ability to work under pressure and within time constraints.
  • Ability to possess excellent writing and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to possess tact, judgment, poise, initiative, and maintain a professional appearance at all times.

Minimum Educational and Training Requirements

Georgia Board of Court Reporting certification and four years of court reporting experience in a court, freelance field of service, or combination of both. Special consideration would be extended to Registered Professional Reporters and reporters who possess a Certificate of Merit from the NCRA. The Georgia Board of Court Reporting requires that all court reporters in the state of Georgia be certified. Certification may be achieved by testing with the National Court Reporters Association, National Verbatim Reporters Association, or the Georgia Board of Court Reporting. After passing a national exam, an applicant may apply for Georgia certification. The previous attainment of a passing score on the NCRA Exam or the NVRA Exam does satisfy the Board's NCRA and NVRA testing requirements, respectively.

Physical Requirements

The work is typically performed while sitting at a desk or table or while intermittently sitting, standing, bending, crouching, or stooping. The employee is regularly required to use hands to feel, reach with hands and arms. The employee occasionally lifts light and heavy objects up to 50 lbs.

  • Reaching – extending hands or arms in any direction.
  • Repetitive Motion – substantial movements of wrists, hands, fingers.
  • Speaking – expressing ideas with spoken word, convey detailed, important instructions accurately, concisely.
  • Standing – for sustained periods of time.
  • Stooping – bending body downward, forward at waist, with full motion of lower extremities and back.
  • Talking 1- expressing ideas by spoken word
  • Visual Acuity 1 - prepare, analyze data, transcribing, computer terminal, extensive reading.
  • Visual Acuity 3 - determine accuracy, neatness, observe facilities/structures.
  • Visual Acuity 5 -close acuity for inspection of small defects, machines, use measurement devices, or fabricate parts.
  • Walking - on foot to accomplish tasks, long distances, or site to site.

The work is typically performed in an office, library, or computer room.
