The Fresh Specialist Manager works with Fresh Specialist and Field Leaders to ensure proper deployment of the “US Foods Way,” ensuring Fresh plays are activated appropriately in the Area/Market. In addition, the FSM will serve as a feedback conduit from stakeholders within the Fresh group and across the field to gauge play adoption/success and drive continuous improvement

Lead, develop, manage and coach Fresh Category Specialists in the area. Provide management oversight and work in partnership with Fresh Field Leader, Sales and Category Management to prioritize, prepare, perform and pursue Specialists’ account visits. Coach Fresh Specialist team and provides input into market and area category plans. Work with Specialists to increase sales and penetration of the Fresh category segments to, provide expertise and consultative services, and consistent selling process both with and without Sellers. Support the delivery of the Customer Experience consistently across the organization


  • Responsible for the coaching and development of the Fresh Specialist team across multiple markets to drive penetration and growth of fresh category/segment through consultative sales activities for targeted customers with Sales Team, promoting and providing business solutions including providing consulting expertise to customers on the key product considerations, product features/benefits and usage/preparation of the product

  • FSM will act as player/coach in their Area and support with customer calls based on matrix to support fresh category growth

  • Participate in Sales planning meetings with DCS, Area VP of Merchandising and Marketing and Area Sales leadership to allocate and deploy Specialists’ resources against highest potential penetration, conversion, and new account prospect opportunities; coach the Specialists on how to assist Sellers in opening new accounts with highest potential

  • Direct and guide Specialists, as necessary, in developing selling and relevant training materials in conjunction with Category Management and Training functions. Advise the Specialists on how to assist in training Sellers, focusing on top penetration priorities and utilizing hands-on product and printed materials during monthly sales meetings and one-on-one opportunities in the field, as well as coaching Sellers during ride-alongs

  • Manage the work load of the specialist so they can promote business solutions/restaurant consulting services and participate in penetration, new item sales and EB product conversion activities at targeted accounts to increase sales and profitability and achieve division case growth objectives for category/segment, as well as realize Exclusive Brand (EB) conversion opportunities

  • Work with Category Management to provide market intelligence and help shape category plans; assist in category growth by acquiring and providing marketing intelligence and customer feedback on product offerings, pricing, trends, and innovations in the market; provide input into marketing/selling materials and events in the Area

  • Develops and coaches field talent – includes performance management, hiring, and line management of Area/Market Fresh Specialists

  • Works with field leadership to ensure plays are timely and executed correctly (adhering to plays as written) in the Areas/Markets. Assists with deployment of the Fresh "US Foods Way" to the field

  • Serves as many-to-one feedback from field to function – collects, consolidates, and cascades feedback upwards from the field to the Fresh Field Leaders. Work with Fresh Field Leaders to ensure feedback from field is properly incorporated into fresh play revisions and codification

  • Coordinate with Field leadership on deployment of fresh fixes and new initiatives to affected areas including Stock Yards alignment and coordination

  • Ensures Compliance and usage of CRM to track activity and performance

  • Works with Fresh Field Leaders to deploy Specialists to strategic accounts as well as collect feedback and success stories on Specialist performance

  • Works with Culinary Process and Field Leader to coordinate seller education. (General Sales Meetings, District Meetings, Region Office Hours, etc.)

  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent work experience required

Related Experience:

  • Minimum of 5 years of relevant experience in Sales and/or Merchandising required
  • Solid history of successful sales within Center of Plate and Produce
  • At least two 2 years of previous management/supervisory experience required
  • Strong communication skills and experience influencing peers and senior leaders
  • Demonstrated excellence in people and talent development
  • A proven record of prioritizing and deploying strategic initiatives
  • Foodservice/distribution, restaurant/culinary or food manufacturing experience required


  • Proven experience and effectiveness in leading and coaching a large team of people required
  • Must be self-directed and highly motivated
  • Strong verbal communication and interpersonal skills, as well as solid presentation skills required
  • Strong people management skills required
  • Must possess a solid, strong business acumen and sales orientation
  • Working knowledge of Outlook, Excel and Word is required
  • Consultative selling skills preferred. Bilingual abilities a plus
