AmeriCorps VISTA Communications & Outreach Coordinator

The Upper Valley Haven is a private non-profit organization that serves people struggling with poverty by providing food, shelter, education, service coordination, and other support The Haven is open 365 days per hear and never charges for any of its services. We now serve over 14,500 people per year.

General Responsibilities

The Communications and Outreach Coordinator VISTA will work under the supervision of the Director of Volunteer Services and Community Education and with support from the food programs team to grow our capacity to help meet the needs of low-income and vulnerable Vermonters through the following activities:

  • Organizational development
  • Communications, training materials and information-sharing
  • Educational resource support
  • Volunteer training materials

Specific Responsibilities

  • Communications
    • Support data collection efforts and processes for including consumer voice into program changes and evaluations
    • Develop communications supporting the mission of the Haven with a focus on:
      • Food programs
      • Policy awareness
      • Advocacy
    • Website content development on above areas
    • Send out targeted volunteer and customer surveys, analyze and communicate results
    • Identify strategies for communicating food programs to customer base
    • Develop materials and identify platforms for communicating Haven’s work in food security to larger community

  • Education resource development
    • Research resources on poverty education
    • Identify gaps in current offerings and resources to fill those gaps
    • Design written educational materials
    • Develop educational activities about understanding poverty and food insecurity for school aged children

  • Develop volunteer training materials including but not limited to
    • Written materials
    • Pamphlets
    • Training and information videos
    • Writes and sends out quarterly volunteer newsletter
    • Development of training plans for soft and targeted skills
    • Identifying gaps in training and new


  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Interest in fields of food insecurity, affordable housing and homelessness
  • Self-starter attitude and ability to work independently
  • Well-developed communication, writing, and editing skills
  • Excellent computer skills
  • Experience in volunteer support, training, and development of training materials a plus
